Summary
Description
|
Stimulation
of projects development and investments in energy efficient technologies
and other measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in vital sectors
of the Ukrainian economy
|

Strategic
Objective
|
The
objectives are designed to assist Ukraine in making real reductions
in GHG emissions by:
- Strengthening
institutions and developing policies necessary for the Government
of Ukraine
- Increasing
environmental management capacity to reduce GHG emissions
- Stimulate
investment in and financing for environmental technologies and
mitigation measures
- Increasing
the involvement of non-governmental actors (industry, environmental
groups and the public)

Results
|
Administrative Structure:
- The CCI developed recommendations on strengthening
Ukraine's administrative structures for addressing climate change
- CCI experts prepared an economic analysis of
Ukraine's potential market in greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions
Project Identification and Preparation:
- The CCI maintains an investment project database
and supports project identification and preparation
- CCI experts prepared five business plans for
GHG mitigation projects at Ukrainian enterprises
- The CCI also identified institutions that are
interested in financing projects and customized business plans
according to their requirements
Training Program:
- The CCI has trained more than 600 Ukrainians
in the following areas of study:
- Basics of Climate Change
- Economics of Climate Change
- Climate Change Transactions
- Conducting a GHG Emission Inventory
- GHG Mitigation Measures for Economies in
Transition
- Monitoring, Evaluation, Reporting, Verification
and Certification of GHG Emission Reductions
- Determining GHG Emission Baselines for Energy
Supply Facilities
- Project Preparation and Financing
- Carbon Sequestration in Forestry and Agriculture
Ukraine's National Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventory:
- The CCI developed guidelines to assist Ukraine
in adapting the national data collection system to the UNFCCC
Common Reporting Format
- The CCI prepared the 1999 and 2000 inventory
of GHG emissions in the power sector of Ukraine
- The CCI has conducted a number of seminars and
workshops for government experts involved in the preparation of
Ukraine's inventory, and CCI experts are available to the GOU
to assist with the review of technical data and the document preparation
Raising Awareness and Building Consensus:
- The Climate Change Initiative sponsors a number
of activities aimed at raising public awareness about global climate
change in Ukraine
- A Multilateral Working Group on Climate Change
was initiated to promote communication and coordination within
the international donor community and between donors and the GOU
- An NGO Climate Change Working Group has received
support for public events and seminars on climate change
