Sector

Coal industry

Proponent/Project Owner

Komsomolets Donbassa Mine (Donetsk region)

Background

The Komsomolets Donbassa Mine was opened in 1982, and is the largest power generating coal supplier in Ukraine. The mine’s production capacity is 1.8 million tons of coal. The current output is 0.8 million tons per year. The mine employs 5600 workers. According to a resolution by the Ukrainian Parliament, Komsomolets Donbassa will be the first mine to be privatized and has already been corporatized.

Technical Summary

It represents a potential source of heat and electric power, and automobile fuel. The company has conducted a preliminary assessment of the potential methane reserves and reduction of emissions, and has prepared a business plan.

Project Goal and GHGs Targeted

The proposed project plans to utilize approximately 13 billion m3 of methane over the project lifetime (10 years) . Project implementation will also improve safety of the mining process.

Estimated Cost

The company estimates the project will cost US$ 6.2 million.

Status and Financing

The company is open to discuss various financing mechanisms – a Joint Implementation, direct investment, or to create a new entity to develop the methane reserves. The business plan is available in Ukrainian and English.
