Ostrogvodokanal Municipal Sewage Treatment and Methane Production for Heat Generation Sector Municipal Services: water supply and sewage treatment Proponent/Project Owner State enterprise "Ostrogvodokanal", town of Ostrog, Rivne region Background The municipal water company, which is also responsible for sewage treatment, has an opportunity to obtain methane from sewage water and to use the methane for the generation of electricity or heat production. Due to the rapid growth of the educational establishments and industrial enterprises in the town, Ostrogvodokanal needs to add capacity to ensure a complete treatment of municipal and industrial sewage. The existing water and sewage treatment facilities are insufficient; hence part of the untreated water is discharged into the river Goryn. Project Goal and GHGs Targeted Reduce emissions of CO2, CH4 through methane production and capture for use in electricity or heat generation. Technical Summary Using technology for anaerobic treatment of sewage and installation of equipment for methane recovery will enable production of over 2,000 m3 of methane per day and, in addition, high quality organic fertilizer. The estimated average annual methane recovery is 730,000 m3. The methane could also be used for district heating purposes. Estimated Cost $ 20,000 to $ 200,000 of which hryvnas 30% and foreign exchange 70%. Project Owner will contribute equity.
